Debroag Crombie at McKinney Public Library

The McKinney Public Library will offer a free talk to the public by bestselling mystery writer Deborah Crombie on Thursday, December 3rd at 7 PM in the Dulaney Room of the Roy and Helen Hall Memorial Library, 101 E. Hunt St. Ms. Crombie will discuss her thirteenth and latest Detective Superintendent Duncan Kincaid/Sergeant Gemma James mystery, Necessary as Blood, published October 2009.

Ms. Crombie, a McKinney native, was born in Dallas, grew up in Richardson, and graduated from Austin College in Sherman with a degree in biology. Although a native Texan, her novels are set exclusively in the United Kingdom. Her first Duncan Kincaid/Gemma James novel, A Share in Death was nominated for the Agatha and Macavity awards for Best First Novel. Her fifth novel, Dreaming of the Bones (Bantam, 1997) was chosen by the Independent Mystery Booksellers of America as one of the 100 Best Crime Novels of the Century. Her subsequent award-winning novels have been published worldwide to international acclaim.

McKinney Living Mag: Profiles of Parental Love and Courage

I'm a local freelance writer and am pitching a feature story idea to McKinney Living magazine to appear in the December (Christmas) issue.

Please, if you know any parents in McKinney whose challenges are more difficult than most (even in this economy) -- including parents of severely disabled or sick children, or parents of deceased or injured soldiers, parents dealing with more than one challenge at a time -- please let me know about them through this forum (not in a private message. let others see and be inspired to add their own nominations).

I'd like to profile 4 or 5 sets of parents, or single parents, who deal with their challenges in a way that you find uplifting, positive, and inspirational to the rest of us who face more mundane challenges.

This year, let's honor the Christmas spirit by acknowledging the best examples of humanity right in our own neighborhood. As I heard Dennis Prager say on the radio, "The significant are rarely famous, and the famous are rarely significant." The significant do deserve our united acknowledgment, and possibly anonymous donations to help show them how much McKinney appreciates their daily acts of unheralded goodness.

For any local businesses that choose to donate, I will gladly offer free copywriting for any print ads appearing in future issues of McKinney Living magazine.

Cat Vet needed

I need a new vet for my cat. The Cat Hospital moved to Allen and no longer has Saturday or evening hours. We were happy with them, but can't get there during business hours now.

I've been reading reviews about some of the local vet clinics and they are, frankly, a bit scary. Trying to pick a place off the web isn't for me...

So, I'd sure appreciate a referral from someone who has a cat.

Trinity Trail Halloween Trail Ride and Festivities Oct 31, 2009

Celebrate Halloween on Horseback

The Trinity Trail Preservation Association (TTPA) will sponsor a Halloween trail ride and costume lunch on Saturday, October 31 at the Brockdale Park trailhead in Lucas, Texas, weather permitting.

Trail Ride: Arrive trailhead at 9:30 PM. Ride out at 10:00 PM.

Lunch: TTPA's hardworking Chuck Wagon volunteers will expertly cook hamburgers for a small donation ($5) starting at 12:30 PM.

Costume Parade: At 1:30 PM we will have a costume parade around the trailhead. It should be a great photo opportunity and fun for all.

Trick or Treating: Starting at 2 PM we will have horse trailer trick or treating. This is where the kids wearing their costumes go from horse trailer to trailer to receive their treats. This should provide more photo opportunities.

In addition to your camera, bring your own beverages and lawn chair. Share lunch and good times with other riders.

The ride will be automatically cancelled if it is raining or if there has been so much rain as to make the trail extremely wet, muddy and dangerous. To check on trail conditions call Trail Steward Charlie Gaines at 972-824-3369.

Dont forget your current negative Coggins Certificate for each horse, as state law requires us to check. You cant enter the park without one. For safety reasons, dogs will not be permitted on the trail. They must remain tied at your trailer in camp. Directions to Brockdale Park Trailhead

Lucas is northeast of Dallas, TX. From Dallas, go north on US 75 to the Bethany Drive exit in Allen and go east. Take Bethany Drive through Allen into Lucas (about 5 miles). Counting the light at the expressway exit, you will go through nine lights. The ninth light is at Bethany and FM 1378 where Lucas City Hall will be on the left. Go straight. In about mile, when the road makes a sharp curve, you will see a stoplight and the Lucas Food Mart and Fina station will be on your left. Turn left here on FM 3286 and go less than a mile to Brockdale Park Road. There is a brown Brockdale Park sign on the right just before the turn. It turns off to the right. If you get to the bridge over Lake Lavon you have gone too far. Follow Brockdale Park Road around to the trailhead. You will drive through three 90-degree turns. The trailhead is at the 3rd 90-degree turn on the right and is bordered by white pipe fence. If you get to the boat ramp you have gone too far.

About Trinity Trail Preservation Association

The Trinity Trail Preservation Association is an all-volunteer equestrian organization whose main purpose is to maintain the 25.5-mile long trail on the Corps of Engineers land along Lake Lavon and to network with other trail riders. Besides maintaining the trail, the group sponsors trail rides and cookouts and has quarterly meetings with speakers on horse-related issues. The group is truly regional and has nearly 200 member families from the nearby communities. In addition, riders and hikers from all over the Metroplex come to enjoy the beauty and peacefulness of the trail. The trail runs from Highland Park in the north through Brockdale Park in Lucas through Collin Park in St. Paul to East Fork Park in Wylie.

Town Lake sidewalks
